What Is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin. It traces back to a passage in De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a philosophy book by the Roman writer Cicero from 45 BC. A printer in the 1500s is thought to have jumbled passages from it to make a type specimen. The text became widely known in the 1960s when it appeared on Letraset transfer sheets, and later in desktop publishing programs. It has no meaning in the form we use it, which is the point: readers look at the layout instead of reading the words.

Lorem ipsum is tidy. Its words are a similar length, it has no long names, no numbers and no accents. Real content is messier, and that is where layouts break. Before you finish a design, also try:
- A very long single word or web address that cannot wrap, to see whether it overflows its box.
- A headline that wraps to three lines, and one that is only a single word.
- Empty and very short text, so cards and buttons do not collapse.
- Other writing systems, such as right-to-left languages like Arabic and Hebrew, or scripts with taller letters like Devanagari, which can need more line height.
