Free CSV to JSON Converter

CSV (comma-separated values) is the simplest way to store a table, and it is what spreadsheets such as Excel and Google Sheets export. JSON is what web applications, APIs and databases expect. This CSV to JSON converter turns one into the other in seconds. It follows the standard CSV rules for quoted values, commas inside text and line breaks inside cells, and everything runs in your browser so your data never leaves your device.

How to Convert CSV to JSON

  1. Paste your CSV into the input box, or press Open a file and pick a .csv, .tsv or .txt file.
  2. Leave the delimiter on Auto-detect, or choose comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
  3. Choose whether the first row is a header, and pick the output format and indentation.
  4. Press Convert to JSON.
  5. Copy the result or press Download .json to save it as a file.

Options Explained

OptionWhat it does
Array of objectsEach row becomes an object. The header row provides the keys.
Array of arraysEach row becomes a plain list of values, including the header row.
First row is the headerUses the first row as key names. If it is off, keys are named column_1, column_2 and so on.
Detect numbers and true/falseTurns 42 into a number and true into a boolean. Values with leading zeros, such as phone numbers and ZIP codes, stay as text.
Empty cells as nullUses null instead of an empty string for blank cells.
Trim spacesRemoves spaces at the start and end of every value.

Example

name,age,city
"Smith, Jane",34,Kathmandu
Ravi,28,Pokhara
[
{ "name": "Smith, Jane", "age": 34, "city": "Kathmandu" },
  { "name": "Ravi", "age": 28, "city": "Pokhara" }
]

Tips for Clean Conversions

  • Quote values that contain the delimiter. A value such as “Smith, Jane” must be wrapped in double quotes, and a double quote inside a value is written twice.
  • Check your delimiter. Many European spreadsheets export with semicolons, because the comma is used as a decimal mark.
  • Keep every row the same length. Missing cells become null, and extra cells get automatic key names.
  • Use unique header names. If a name repeats, the tool adds a number to it, such as city_2.

Common Uses

  • Preparing spreadsheet data for a REST API or a JavaScript app.
  • Loading exported data into MongoDB, Firebase and other JSON databases.
  • Turning a product list or a contact list into a data file for a website.
  • Converting log exports and reports so they are easy to process with code.

Privacy and Limits

The conversion happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored, so the tool is safe for private data. Files up to 10 MB are accepted. Very large files can make a browser tab slow, so for huge datasets use a command-line tool or a script.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the CSV to JSON converter free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser. Your data stays on your device.

Can it handle commas and line breaks inside a cell?

Yes, as long as the cell is wrapped in double quotes, which is how spreadsheets export them.

Why do my ZIP codes or phone numbers keep their leading zeros?

Values such as 00123 are kept as text on purpose, because turning them into numbers would delete the zeros.

What if my file uses semicolons or tabs?

Auto-detect checks the first line and picks the most likely delimiter. You can also choose one yourself.

Can I convert JSON back to CSV?

Not with this tool. It only converts CSV to JSON.
